April's New Images: Snowy Sheathbills

Colour photograph of the snowy sheathbill which is usually found on the ground. They are the only land bird native to the Antarctic continent and habitually walk on the ground, only flying when alarmed or in migration. They do not have webbed feet and so do not rest on the water but are known to hitch a ride with a passing ship. Their breeding season coincides with that of the penguins.
