April's New Images

  • This is a colour photograph of an Antarctic Prion which is also known as a dove prion or totorore and is the largest of the prions. Like all prions, its underparts are white and upperparts are blue-grey, with a dark {quote}M{quote} across its back to its wingtips.
  • A color photograph of a Cape petrel (cape pigeon) in the South Atlantic Ocean. This is a common seabird with a black head and neck, and a white belly, breast and its underwing is white with a black border.

  • A colour photograph of a southern fulmar flying over the south atlantic ocean. This seabird breeds on the coast of Antarctica and on surrounding islands. It nests in clonies on cliffs, laying a single egg on a ledge or crevice.
  • Color photograph of a fur seal, which is more closely related to sea lions than true seals, and share with them external ears, relatively long and muscular foreflippers and the ability to walk on all fours.
  • Colour photograph of the snowy sheathbill which is usually found on the ground. They are the only land bird native to the Antarctic continent and habitually walk on the ground, only flying when alarmed or in migration. They do not have webbed feet and so do not rest on the water but are known to hitch a ride with a passing ship. Their breeding season coincides with that of the penguins.
